The ASTORIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (ASO), the flagship ensemble of AMS, performs programs of traditional classical repertoire, new music, and concerts for children and special occasions. The musicians of the Astoria Symphony are professional and promising young musicians from the New York City area - the players come from all five boroughs and the greater Tri-State area. The ASO has performed works such as Mozart's Requiem , Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 , Brahms' Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 3 , Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf , J. S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 , Berg's Violin Concerto , Stravinsky's Firebird , and Copland's Appalchian Spring (full original version with the Martha Graham Company dancing), among others. The ASO also champions modern American music, regularly commissioning and premiering new works. The orchestra has given over a dozen symphonic works their world premiere since its founding in 2002. The ASO is conducted by Music Director Silas Nathaniel Huff and guest conductors of the highest caliber.
Currently, the Astoria Symphony Orchestra has no vacant seats and is not accepting applications, resumes, or recordings at this time.
Founded in 1995 by conductor Silas Nathaniel Huff, LOST DOG NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE has performed in New York, California, Texas, Spain, and Germany. In 2003, Lost Dog became the resident chamber ensemble of the Astoria Music Society. The core ensemble is comprised of flute (Christine Perea), clarinet (Thomas Piercy), piano (Laura Barger), violin (Miranda Cuckson), and cello (Emily Brausa), with occasional guest artists, and is led by Artistic Director Garth Edwin Sunderland (composer). Lost Dog presents 3-4 programs of new American and International music every season, performing in both Manhattan and Queens. Lost Dog is the only new music ensemble operating in the borough of Queens, and regularly performing outstanding new music to enthusiastic audiences.
The Astoria Symphonic Choir is the newest ensemble in the Astoria Music Society. The choir provides world-class choral music experiences to singers and audiences in the community of Astoria, New York.
The choir was established in 2010 to perform major choral works with the Astoria Symphony in Astoria, Queens, NYC. The choir's inaugural season included lauded performances Gerge Frederik Handel's Messiah and Franz Josef Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass . The 2011-12 season promises continued partnership with the orchestra and will include works by Borodin, Vivaldi, Mozart, Lauridsen, and more. Singers with all levels of experience and from all walks of life are welcomed to sing with this community-based choir.
