The
Astoria Music Society presents a
micro-festival in celebration of the
great Russian composer Alfred
Schnittke's
75th birthday, performing two
of his most celebrated works. Schnittke
was known for a technique he created
called 'polystylism,' in which musical
styles from different historical periods
are presented within the same piece,
resulting in music that's both easily
recognizable and excitingly new. He was a prolific
composer and composed nine symphonies, four violin concertos, two cello
concertos, concertos for piano, and a triple concerto, as well as chamber
music, ballet scores, choral and vocal works, and three operas. [more

In honor of the 75th anniversary of his
birth, the Astoria Symphony Orchestra
will present one of his first works in
this vein, the quirky and humorous
Quasi Una Sonata, with virtuosa
violinist
Miranda Cuckson,
and the Lost Dog
New Music Ensemble will perform
his
String Trio (also with Ms.
Cuckson), a later work that demonstrates
the composer's more serious side.
Each
concert will include a brief discussion of Schnittke's composition and the
historical significance and style of the piece(s) being performed, and a
complimentary post-concert reception with the performers.
